MARY JANE BORDERS
MARY JANE BORDERS, the fifth child of Major Hugh Borders and wife, was born February 17, 1838, and was educated at Limestone Col1ege She joined the church at the age of 16, and at her death was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Earl, North Carolina. She died May 28, 1928 of erysipelas at the age of 90 years. On May 6, 1858, she was married to Joseph Hopson Austell of near Gaffney, South Carolina. They lived for several years in York County, South Carolina, after which they located in what is now Earl, North Carolina. Joseph Hopson Austell died August 8, 1910 of cancer. He was a gallant Confederate soldier, having entered the war after the birth of his second child; he remained throughout the war and returned without a wound.
To this union were born 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls; William Quitman, Leola, Samuel, Mike, James B, Joseph Hopson, Jr., Forest, Kate and Mary.
1. William Quitman Austell was born September 15, 1859, and was married July 15, 1880 to Mrs. Maggie Turner. He died June 13, 1907; his wife died of erysipelas. She died August 29, 1921. They had five children; Carrie, Bertha, Mamie, Ernest, and Ethel.
(a) Carrie Austell was married to Walter Graham, July 12, 1905. They had five children; Winford, Austell, Frances, Helen and Max. Carrie Graham died August 21, 1959, and is buried in New Hope Cemetery, Earl, North Carolina. Walter Graham died November 16, 1967.
(a-l) Winford Gilchrist Graham served in World War II with the military police for years. He lived in Earl, was unmarried, and dealt in wholesale meats. Winford Gilchrist Graham died Sept. 29, 1967.
(a-2) James Austell Graham served in World War II in the European Theatre for years. He lives in Earl, North Carolina, unmarried and is a co-traveling salesman for the Streitman Biscuit Company.
(a-3) Frances Graham was a former music director of Rocky Mountain N. C. She married J. Witfield Lee of Rocky Mt., N. C August 23, 1942. He operates grocery stores in Wilson and Rocky Mt., N. C. They live in Wilson, N C. They have three children; J. Witfield Lee, born in 1943; Francis Graham Lee, in 1948; and Carolyn Elizabeth, born in 1950.
(aa) Joseph Witfield Lee, Jr. married Patricia Ann Roberts, November 19, 1967.
(a-4) Helen Graham married John Thomas Moore, Jr. of Mount Airy, N. C., July 7, 1957. She is a retired music teacher in High Point. He served in World War II in the South Pacific, and is now retired from Railway Express Co. in High Point, N. C.
(a-5) Max Lindsay Graham served in World War II, 2« years in Washington and 2 years in the Phillipines. He married Ruth Cottingham of Dillon, S. C. on June 7, 1953. He is a manager of the A&P; in Gastonia, N. C. They have three children; Max Lindsay Graham, Jr., born in 1954; Ruth Cottingham, in 1957; and John Walter, in 1960. Ruth Cottingham died Dec. 5, 1962.
