THE BORDERS FAMILY

From correspondence from descendants of a John Borders of Kentucky and from a book on the same family in the North Carolina Archives Library, we have received the following information:

John Borders and Michael Borders, brothers, came to America with Lord Cornwallis during the Revolutionary War and were with him at Yorktown, Virginia when he surrendered to General Washington. The two brothers separated and never saw or heard from each other again. John located in the western part of Virginia on the farm of Hezekiah Sellards, whose daughter he married about the year 1790; He later moved from there to Johnson County, Kentucky. Michael Borders, on leaving Yorktown, came south and was lost sight of by his brother John.

These brothers were of German descent, having been born in either Germany or Holland. Their parents did not come to America, and though having served in the British army in America, the brothers do not seem to have been English subjects. While the proof is not positive that this is our Michael, every item of information points in that direction. We do not yet know whom this particular Michael Borders married, or when, but we do know that his son, Michael, was born about 1781.
