Related Surname Spelling Variations

In research that I have done, and that which was done by others and I have access to, these Surname Spelling Variations appear.

They are:

Austill, Austell, Austil, Austel,
Austile, Austille, Austel, Austelle,
Austall, Austull, and Ostil.

Q. Are these names all related?
A. In Census and other Public-Record Data these variations commonly appear. In some cases, when tracing a family from Census to Census, the Surname Spelling will vary from one Census to the next. Several reasons may be given:

  1. Census takers may have written the spellings as they felt they should be.
  2. Education was not universal in the early days of our country; some of our ancestors may have been unsure of the spelling.
  3. Sometimes people changed the spellings because of family disagreements or other reasons.

There may be family groups which use some of these spellings which are not linked, but research indicates that probably most of these families are related.

Q. What is the known exception to the above answer?
A. There are some families which use the Austel spelling which have immigrated from Germany or thereabouts and are not directly related to the main group. There are some families currently in Germany which use the name. Here are the details which I have concerning this:

These are the only documented exceptions that I am aware of at this time.

Q. What was the original spelling?
A. Probably the original spelling was Austell, (at least in England)
