The Ohio Austills

William and Rebecca Austill
And Their Descendants

The earliest Austill in Ohio seems to have been William Austill. Ohio kept very early marriage records, and there is a record of the marriage on 27 March, 1807, in Ross County, of William Austill and Rebecca Warren. We have the will of Solomon Warren, proved in 1820, which gives the name of his daughter Rebecca and his son-in-law William Austill.

William Austill probably died before 1830, for on that year's census, Rebecca Austill is listed as head of the household.

Their oldest child was Isaac Austill, born in Ross Co., in 1808.
Isaac grew up to hold a fairly prominent place in the development of southeast Ohio.

It is not certain how many other children William and Rebecca had. Several Austills appear on lists of marriages in the 1830's and 1840's; probably some or all are children of William and Rebecca. These names are included on the family group sheet of this couple. The latest marriage was tbat of Solomon, who married Margaret Bodkin in 1851; he could have been a child or a grandchild of William.

The use of the name Solomon hints of a relationship with Solomon Warren.. There is a Rebecca, who could have been named for her mother Rebecca Warren; and a son named Jeremiah, which is a favorite name in this family.

Most of these younger families apparently moved out of the state as they do not show up in later census records. The 1850 census gives as head of house Isaac and Jeremiah; the 1860 census gives only Isaac, and Isaac Newton.

Following is a list of Austill 3 marriages as taken from state vital records:

Rebecca Austill, marr. Alexander Trindle 19 Aug. 1832
Delitha Austill, marr. Alexander Trindle 8 Jan. 1832
     Hannah Austill, marr. Baker Wishon
Solomon Austill, marr. Margaret Bodkin 6 Feb. 1851
George Austill, marr. Ellen Connally 11 Jan. 1834
Jeremiah Austill, marr. Friendly Sewall, 28 Dec. 1843

The two Trindle marriages are puzzling but we believe that Rebecca and Delitha Austill were mother and daughter; and that the two Alexander Trindles were father and son.

William Austill left very few records; there seems to be no will, deeds, or other papers which would give information about him and his family. He evidently came to Ohio as a young man, unmarried; he married in 1807; one family member believes he served in the War of 1812, but no record has yet been found. If he died between 1820 and 1830 (d. 1829), he was probably still a young man.
